Cambridge (English: Cambridge, formerly translated as Kangqiao [2]), a city, borough and non-metropolitan area in Cambridgeshire, east England, is the oldest university city in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Cambridge was founded on the River Cam, about 80 kilometers north of London. The 2011 UK census showed that it had a population of about 124,000, of which about 25,000 were students. Archaeological evidence shows that Cambridge was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, and later became an important trade center during the Roman and Viking periods. In the 12th century, the Royal Charter granted Cambridge the status of a town, but its current city status was not officially granted until 1951. |
